More than 100 SAIT AUPE members came out Oct. 10 for lunch-hour information sessions. We shared pizza and the latest news from our bargaining committee and our negotiator John Wevers.

Here are some of the main discussion points:

Right to Strike: New legislation gives Alberta public sector workers the right to strike and has changed the landscape for us and SAIT. It signals the end of compulsory arbitration, where a neutral third party sets the agreement (including wage increase). Disputes now have to be settled at the table, through mediation or by a strike or lockout. A strike would be a last resort.

Essential Services: Before a strike would even be considered, an Essential Services Agreement needs to be reached between the union and SAIT to identify Essential Services workers. If no one will lose life or limb if you are on strike, you are not likely an Essential Services worker.

Zero increases across the board: A zero increase in wages or cost of living is really a wage loss, since cost of living still goes up over a multi-year period. It also affects contributions to savings plan. That’s why we need to stay united and firm at the bargaining table.

Survey Results: You’ve probably seen the circulated results, but here are the main priorities:

  • Wages: More than 90% support our bargaining committee’s belief that a wage freeze is equivalent to a wage reduction.
  • Job security: Recognizing seniority is of most importance, especially concerning layoffs and position abolishment.
  • Other compensation in various forms.
  • Benefits plans coverage and improvements and increases.

On Oct. 25, both the AUPE and SAIT bargaining committees will be meeting for the first time. Feel free to contact any member of our bargaining committee for more information on the process or survey.
